PHILIPSBURG–The United Democrats/St. Maarten Christian Party (UD/SMCP) government has reportedly lost the support from two additional Members of Parliament (MPs) in Luc Mercelina and Chanel Brownbill. The Daily Herald understands they are now on their way to form a new government with the opposition parties.
Franckie Meyers, who recently declared himself independent, is understood not to be part of the talks to form a new coalition.
UD MP Sarah Wescot-Williams confirmed to The Daily Herald that a new coalition is being formed. This newspaper understands that the new coalition is with the National Alliance (NA) and United St. Maarten Party (US Party).
“I regretfully inform you that our UD-led government has fallen,” an internal message from UD MP Sidhart “Cookie” Bijlani to members of the Indian Merchants Association (IMA) over the weekend, stated. “The continuous political turmoil would make it impossible for the country to tackle the economic problems. I will continue to work towards stability and good governance and keep you abreast of the developments in the next coming days,” the message read.
NA Leader Silveria Jacobs declined to comment when contacted on Sunday, but promised to provide information soon.
