MARIGOT–Four board members from French-side marine trade association Métimer will be attending the annual Paris Boat Show NAUTIC from December 8 to 16, 2018.
It will be another opportunity to promote the destination and give updates on the recovery of the island and marine industry 14 months after Irma. Visitors will be assured St. Martin is open for business and that cruising grounds are still as attractive as ever.
“It’s a very important moment for us to put St. Martin in the best possible light,” said President Bülent Gülay. “At our stand we will not only be receiving visitors, but also Ministers, insurance companies and boat charter companies. It’s important for them to know that we are up and running again.”
Métimer will also be promoting and soliciting sponsorship for its new Nautical Club project that is to be located in Galis Bay on the site of the old Omnisports Hall, where the Collège Mont des Accords had set up a small club before Hurricane Irma struck. The estimated cost of the project is 200 to 250,000 euros.
Gülay said architectural plans for the Club are already advanced and the idea is that the club will be partly located in the Omnisports Hall offices though approval has to be obtained from the Collectivité. The club will offer sailing and all water sports.
Commenting on the Collectivité’s recent notice to boat owners to have wrecks and abandoned vessels removed by December 8, Gülay said with so many wrecks, some still here from Luis in 1995, there is potential for a lucrative dismantling and recycling industry, something that has not been fully explored yet.
