Ministers, police warn against illegal parking

PHILIPSBURG–Infrastructure Minister Christophe Emmanuel and Minister of Justice Rafael Boasman have the same mind-set when it comes to drivers parking illegally on the sidewalk on Front Street. Both Ministers made a statement about the matter at the weekly press briefing on Wednesday.

Minister Emmanuel’s removal of bollards placed along Front and Back Streets recently allowed motorists to park on the sidewalk. Pedestrians and visitors to the island continue to walk on the street, as often cars are parked on the sidewalks on both sides.

“The bollards were not removed so that you [motorists – Ed.] can park. They were removed to allow those in wheelchairs, visitors and locals to walk without any hindrance,” said Emmanuel.

Boasman met with the Police Chief and Chief Prosecutor on Wednesday to discuss fines and the police approach to those who continue to park illegally.

The Police Force issued a statement on Wednesday announcing traffic controls in the Philipsburg area. These controls will monitor all type of traffic violations, mainly illegal parking in all areas of town.

“Illegal parking will not be tolerated and this information serves as a warning to all drivers to avoid getting a fine or your vehicle being towed and to avoid any unnecessary inconvenience,” according to police.
