~ Demonstration planned for September 4 ~
MARIGOT–Movement for Justice and Prosperity (MJP) has reacted with outrage over the Chez Raymond affair on Baie Rouge and is calling for “massive mobilisation” against what it described as a “grave injustice.”
“It is with astonishment and dismay that we learned of the demolition of the beach grill occupied by Raymond Mussington on Baie Rouge Beach for over 30 years,” MJP said in a release. “Our indignation is exacerbated more at the moment due to the fact the order to demolish, to this date, has neither been definitively pronounced by a magistrate, nor executed by a public authority.
“On the contrary, the initiative was taken by a few members of the Terres-Basses Association who decided to give themselves the right to demolish the structure themselves. We recall the law: No one has the right to exercise justice himself. No one is above the law.
“It is also important to stress that we are in a state of law and not in a banana republic. It is the destruction of property belonging to others, which, moreover, is condemnable by the law. This detestable and heinous act undeniably runs counter to social cohesion, essential on the territory of St. Martin.
“As a reminder: Act No. 86-2 of January 3,1986, on coastal development, protection and enhancement. The ‘Law of the Coast’ establishes the principle that the public domain is inalienable; in other words, no one can claim to be the owner of this common space. Article L.321-9 of the Environment Code provides the same details.
“MJP is giving our unwavering support to the Soualiga United Collective and calls on them to mobilise and participate in the event which will take place on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, from 8:00am at the Nina Duverly School. It is an opportunity to denounce this flagrant injustice and to unite in order to oppose all forms of injustice. We are opposed to all privatisation of beaches on our island.”
