POND ISLAND–Some NAf. 3 million was made available for destination marketing to boost St. Maarten’s economy by attracting more visitors.
Finance Minister Perry Geerlings said on Wednesday that funds are available for destination promotion and other projects of the Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (TEATT). This was in response to Tourism Minister Stuart Johnson’s stance that more funds are needed for St. Maarten to compete with other Caribbean tourist destinations.
These funds will be taken from the Dutch government-supported and World Bank-administered St. Maarten Recovery and Resilience Trust Fund.
With the 2019 budget only passed at the beginning of July, the allocation of funds for the 2020 budget has just started to move forward. The 2020 budget is due in Parliament by September.
Geerlings envisions that the Ministry of General Affairs and the Ministry of TEATT will possibly see more funds coming their way.
