More girls born at SMMC in 2018 | THE DAILY HERALD

CAY HILL–More girl babies than boy babies were delivered at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) last year, data provided by SMMC show.

According to the figures, a total of 422 babies were delivered at SMMC between January and December last year. Of the 422 babies delivered, 207 were boys and 215 were girls. Two of the babies born at SMMC were twins.

Nineteen of the babies were born to mothers who were in their teens. Two births were to mothers who were 17 years old; 13 to mothers who were 18 years old and 4 to mothers who were 19 years old.

There was one maternal death linked to the HELLP syndrome. HELLP syndrome is a life-threatening pregnancy complication, usually considered to be a variant of preeclampsia. Both conditions usually occur during the later stages of pregnancy, or sometimes after childbirth.
