MARIGOT–In recent weeks, many vehicles registered abroad or with non-compliant registration plates have been circulating in the territory, prompting the Territorial Police to issue a reminder of the rules applying to this subject.
Vehicle owners, whose registration plates are not those of the Collectivité of St. Martin are required, within one month, to go to the Collectivité registration office to regulate their situation.
All vehicles that have been acquired abroad, whether or not they are driven with a foreign plate, also have a time limit, before which the registration formalities must have been completed.
Exceeding the deadlines is sanctioned by a fourth-class fine of 135 euros in accordance with Article. R.322-5 of the French Highway Code and the offender risks immobilisation of his vehicle by the police.
In addition, vehicles travelling without license plates (W) are liable to a fourth-class fine of 135 euros and immobilisation of the vehicle pursuant to Article R.317-8 of the French Highway Code.
As of December 2018, Territorial Police and Gendarmerie checks will be carried out throughout the country to ensure compliance with the highway code and in particular with the regulations on number plates.
The persons concerned are invited to visit the car registration office located at Rue de la Liberté –Bord de Mer– in Marigot, from Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 2:00pm. Tel. (0590) 87.61.91.
