PHILIPSBURG–The installation and composition of Parliament’s permanent and ad hoc committees and those of the Latin American Parliament was approved on Friday in a plenary session in Parliament House.
This came after a brief Central Committee meeting on Thursday to review the lists.
The reconstituting of the ad hoc and permanent committees of the St. Maarten Parliament and the Parlatino is required after the start of the new Parliamentary Year. The 2018-2019 year was officially opened on September 11.
Although the composition of the 11 Parlatino committees was approved by Members of Parliament (MPs) there will be no travel to any meeting until after October 24. This is the result of a parliamentary motion, adopted on October 24, 2017, postponing attendance to committee meetings of the regional parliamentary organization.
When the one-year travel suspension is lifted, MPs can again travel to countries in Latin America, primarily to Panama where Parlatino is headquartered, for meeting. However, the travel postponement could be longer if another motion is tabled by an MP for this and adopted by the majority in the legislature.
The travel suspension was a measure taken by Parliament to cut cost in this post-Hurricane Irma recovery period.
