EUSTATIUS–Statians will prepare and welcome the New Year with various religious and secular events starting today, Monday, New Year’s Eve, and continuing tomorrow, Tuesday, New Year’s Day.

The Seventh Day Adventist Church in Newton’s Pasture will start its service at 5:00pm. The Methodist, Catholic, Anglican, Big Stone Fellowship, Spanish, Bible Baptist and other churches will hold their services at 10:00pm.

The Boardwalk Café will host Jamm Boys Band, DJ Max and DJ Pleasure. Turbulanzz Band will be at Super Burger Restaurant and Bar. There are also a number of private events throughout the island.

Some people will ring in the New Year at the bay, Hillhead or at Fort Oranje as they catch a glimpse of the fireworks across the water on Saba.

The fourth annual New Year’s Splash will be the first big event on New Year’s Day. Hosted by Scubaqua Dive Centre and the Old Gin House, the event will be held in Oranje Bay in front of the dive centre at 4:00pm on Tuesday. The New Year’s Splash is a Dutch tradition recently introduced to the island. It aims to give persons a fresh start with a cold dunk in the sea. DJ Gerard will spin the tunes.

Traditional “Ollieballen” – a fried Dutch snack and pea soup will be served at the New Year’s Splash.
