ST. EUSTATIUS–A new Parish Council for the St. Eustatius Roman Catholic Church has been formed. Bishop Luis Secco from Willemstad asked resident priest Peter de Jong to form a new leadership team.

“Members of the former Parish Council have done a great job in the past,” said De Jong. “And we are very grateful for their long and loyal service.”

The new Council met for the first time last Wednesday. Four of its members are Sixto Martina, Reina Lijfrock, Conrad Janysek and Maxine Spanner-Suares.

Joseph Clarke will join the council team in May. Clarke is a retired lawyer who is currently visiting his children in the United States.

“Our Bishop’s decision was not taken lightly,” De Jong explained. “He wants to breathe new life into the government of our wonderful church community. I am extremely delighted that our new council members are willing to devote their time and creative talents and skills.”

De Jong said it is the aim of the Council’s second meeting on Wednesday to draw up an “ambitious and exciting” Year Plan.

“Our St. Eustatius Catholic congregation is a sizeable, devoted and inspired community. That inspiration will endure,” De Jong stated.
