The new parliamentary year was officially declared open by the President of Parliament following Governor Ajamu Baly’s address on behalf of the Government during a Solemn Public Meeting at 10:00 am.

The theme for the new parliamentary year is “Building Digital Trust: Responsible AI for a Stronger Democracy and Empowered Communities.”

In recognition of the theme, Parliament honoured individuals and organisations whose contributions have positively impacted the community through digital innovation and the responsible use of technology.

Those recognised were Marcus Nicolaas, Kester Small, the St. Maarten Library, the Foresee Foundation and The People's Tribune.

A solemn public meeting was followed by the traditional military parade through Philipsburg, featuring the Marine Detachment on St. Maarten, the St. Maarten Police Force, the Royal Marechaussee, the Coast Guard, the Voluntary Corps St. Maarten and the St. Maarten Youth Brigade.

Parliament invited Group 7 students from the Methodist Agogic Centre John A. Gumbs Campus and Browlia F. Millard Campus to view the parade at Cyrus Wathey Square and interact with dignitaries.

The reception following the ceremonial meeting was hosted by President of Parliament Sarah Wescot-Williams at the Mona Lysa Lounge on Back Street.

During the reception, Nahjah Wyatte Muñoz was announced as the recipient of the 2026 President of Parliament Award (see related story).

The opening of the parliamentary year took place in accordance with the Constitution of St. Maarten and marked the start of the 2026-2027 parliamentary year.
