PHILIPSBURG–Acting caretaker Justice Minister Perry Geerlings opened the new class of basic police training BPO cadets on Friday, November 15.

The new class of 21 cadets will have their training at the Vineyard Building in Philipsburg.

The training programme is again being conducted by Chief Inspector Rob Appelhof of the police academy in the Netherlands. He managed the last BPO class that graduated a few months ago. Appelhof oversees police training for the Dutch Caribbean.

“Through the great collaboration between the Minister of Justice, the honourable Mr. Perry Geerlings, the Police Force of St. Maarten and the police academy of the Netherlands, it was possible to recruit and hire the new group of cadets in a very short time for this new class,” said police in a press release. The police thanked all those “who made it possible for the class of new cadets to start on such short notice.”

According to police, teachers from the Netherlands police academy will be working with teachers from St. Maarten to implement the educational programme. During the training, the cadets will alternate between classroom and practical instruction. The practical part of the training will end with an examination period.

“Among other things, the cadet will learn, during the training, how to supervise, enforce the various laws and work investigations. After this intensive training, the rookies will be ready to fulfil police tasks in St. Maarten,” said police.
