EUSTATIUS–The St. Eustatius Government has plans to convert Jeems Road into a one-way street. Deputy Government Commissioner Mervyn Stegers explained that when the houses on the side of Jeems Road were built there was also a road projected around these houses, but that road was never constructed. Government now plans to build this road in the near future.
The road in question can be encountered when persons travel to the intersection of Sandy Road with Jeems Road while travelling downward towards Earl N. Merkman Sports Facility on the right side near the two-storey apartments.
The beginning of the planned new road was cleared by an excavator. A dirt road is now visible where the planned road is to be made. Currently, only pedestrians are able to access the dirt road.

Stegers said this new road is going to be built first so that there will be a bypass in place before Jeems Road is going to be reconstructed. The bypass will stay there so that there will be a one-way road to handle traffic going up and the other road will handle traffic going down.
The timeline for the Jeems Road construction is not yet known because the government is starting with the Cherry Tree roads project first. The contract for this project was signed Monday.
The disposed Executive Council had planned reconstruction of Jeems Road to commence on February 7, with the re-pavement of the road from the intersection with Sandy Road to the intersection with Airport Road against the expected cost of US $100,000.
Some work on Jeems Road had already commenced. The concrete pavement on both sides of the street had been dug up and to this day these sections are still unearthed, cause a nuisance to residents and especially senior citizens.
Government Commissioner Marcolino “Mike” Franco said previously that the construction plan for Jeems Road was postponed for a review of the plans and to add underground cabling to the project.
