CAY HILL–St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) has received a boost with the addition of urologist Dr. Carlos Rojas to its team of specialists.
Rojas began his tenure at SMMC early November. With the addition of Dr. Rojas to the team, SMMC’s Urology Department now consists of two full time urologists. The other urologist is Dr. Diego Ramos, who joined SMMC last year.
Rojas originates from Caracas, Venezuela. He earned his medical degrees in urology and general surgery from the Central University of Venezuela (CUV) School of Medicine in Caracas. He completed his residency at the university’s hospital in Caracas from 1999 to 2002.
On completion of his studies, Rojas worked as a clinical instructor at the university for more than 15 years teaching urology to pre- and postgraduate students. These experiences broadened his understanding of the wide range of urology care and treatment options available to patients, SMMC said in a press release on Friday.
Prior to joining SMMC, Dr. Rojas had a private practice in the Leopoldo Aguerrevere clinic in Eastern Caracas for 10 years. “He comes to SMMC with over 16 years’ experience in the field of urology,” according to the release.
His clinical interests include all aspects of adult urology with a focus on urologic issues (bladder, prostate, kidney, testicular, erectile dysfunction) and urogynaecology problems (pelvic floor dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence). He also has advanced training in minimally-invasive surgical approaches (laparoscopic) as well as the traditional open approach.
“I have a true passion for urology because this area of medicine continuously advances toward more-minimally-invasive and non-invasive treatment options that can dramatically improve a patient’s quality of life,” Rojas said. “I am excited to begin my work here at SMMC and continue with the excellent quality of service provided for our patients.”
Patients who wish to make an appointment to see the new urologist can contact the Outpatient Department at tel. 543-1111 ext. 1300/1310 or 1334. Appointments can be made from Mondays through Fridays between 8:00am and 4:30pm. SZV patients are requested to obtain a referral letter from their family doctor before visiting the urologist.
