CAY HILL–Patients in need of urology services can now get them right here in St. Maarten, thanks to the official opening of a Urology Clinic at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) on Monday.

The new multi-purpose clinic, which also houses neurology and pulmonology specialties, is able to cater to the growing demand for these medical services on island, and reinforces SMMC’s objective of providing quality care close to home, the Medical Center said.

The new clinic has been made possible by a financial agreement between SMMC and Zorgverzerkeringskantoor (ZVK) BES (Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba). In addition to patients from St. Maarten, the clinic is also expected to treat a considerable number of patients from the Caribbean Netherlands islands, in particular Saba and St. Eustatius, who will not have to travel very far from home to receive treatment anymore.

The new clinic consists of two doctors’ offices occupied by SMMC resident urologists Dr. Diego Ramos and Dr. Carlos Rojas and used for urology consultations. There is also one urology examination room and one room reserved for consultations with rotational pulmonology and neurology specialists.

During the opening ceremony, Health Minister Emil Lee stressed the importance for the St. Maarten community to have access to more specialties right here in the country. “Ultimately, we strive to improve the quality of life for the residents of St. Maarten by continually raising the level of care, and to provide direct access to care,” Lee said.

SMMC Medical Director Dr. Felix Holiday thanked ZVK for its contribution in making the new clinic possible, and government and Social and Health Insurances SZV for their role as tripartite facilitating members as well.

Dr. Holiday emphasised that the new clinic also caters to pulmonology and neurology patients, making it a true multi-purpose environment.

Dr. Rojas gave a presentation highlighting the new clinic’s capabilities through the use of state-of-the-art equipment and procedures, before providing the audience with a tour of the new facility.

Attending the opening ceremony were invited healthcare stakeholders and SMMC staff.

The new Urology Clinic is located inside SMMC. Patients who wish to make an appointment can do so by contacting the Outpatient Department at tel. 1-721-543-1111 ext. 1378/1379/1307. Appointments can be made Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm. SZV patients are requested to obtain a referral letter from their family doctor before making an appointment.
