Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin on Sunday. PHILIPSBURG--The tropical storm watch for the island has been discontinued. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) monitored closely the progress of Hurricane Beryl. All ten Emergency Support Functions (ESFs) of the country’s disaster management system – GEBE, Telecommunications, Police, Fire Department, Communications, Government Organisation, Tourism, Social and Welfare Affairs, Public Health, and Ministry VROMI (Public Works) – as well as supporting entities such as the Marines continued to make preparations related to the storm. Maximum sustained winds were near 45mph (75 km/h) on Sunday evening with higher gusts. On the forecast track, slight weakening was forecast during the next 24 hours. Weather conditions expected to affect St. Maarten through today, Monday, are gusty winds up to 26 knots/30mph with occasional higher gusts, rainfall accumulations of up to two inches, and minor flooding possible in low-lying areas. “Key ESFs such as the Fire Department, Police, Public Health, Social and Welfare Affairs and the Marines are on standby for rapid response to an emergency,” stated the Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin on Sunday. “Monday will be a normal working day and it is the prerogative of the business owner or manager whether employees should report to work under these pending rainy conditions. All Government services to the community will continue as normal. Princess Juliana International Airport will remain open as well.” Electricity and water supply from GEBE remain available during the passing of the weather system. The government took precautionary measures. Due to a number of homes still under construction and roofs not fully repaired, the EOC decided on Saturday morning to open three hurricane shelters: The Dutch Quarter Community Centre, Zorg en Rust, Dutch Quarter; Milton Peters College gym, L.B. Scott Road, South Reward; and Christian Fellowship Church, Welfare Road 95, Cole Bay. The shelters were opened on Sunday at 5:00pm and close Monday at 5:00pm. The EOC continues to closely monitor the progress of Beryl’s remnants. Residents are advised to do the same.
