‘O’ rating means home uninhabitable

PHILIPSBURG–Spray painted “Bs” and “Os” have been popping in up on buildings throughout the country. The marks have inspired curiosity in many residents.

The markers are part of the ongoing post-Hurricanes Irma and Maria structural assessment by Inspection and Permits Department inspectors.
Houses deemed uninhabitable are marked with the letter “O.” The information will be used for follow-up social assessments.
Structures marked with the letter “B” indicate severe structural damage. This information will be used by the Department for rebuilding assessment.
Structures with no markings have no structural issues.
Home or property owners planning to repair or rebuild a structure that is not in accordance with their issued building permit must report to the Inspection and Permits Department in the Government Administration Building on Pond Island to fill out a permit request. The office is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:00pm. For more information, call 1-721-520-6573.
