OPSS missed donation registration deadline

PHILIPSBURG–One St. Maarten People Party (OSPP) is the only party to have missed the deadline to submit its donation register as prescribed by law to the Electoral Council. The register was due before February 1 based on the National Ordinance on registration and finances of political parties.

The Council is urgently request OSPP to submit its donation register to avoid measures against the party as is laid down in Article 44 of the National Ordinance.

OSPP’s leader is Leonard “Lenny” Priest who is now a candidate on the National Alliance slate for the February 26 snap elections.

Eleven of the13 political parties registered with the Electoral Council in 2017 submitted their 2017 donation registers of 2017 before the deadline. Before the deadline, one party requested for a week’s extension. This was granted and that party has since handed in its donation register.

The Electoral Council said on Monday despite several reminders of its legal obligations OSPP failed to submit its donation register.
