MARIGOT–Lycée Professionnel des Iles du Nord in Marigot, Cité Scolaire Robert Weinum in La Savane and Collèges Mont des Accords, Quartier d’Orléans and Soualiga (Cul-de-Sac), were severely damaged by the 2017 hurricanes and will be under reconstruction throughout the summer.
Soualiga Collège will not be rebuilt, but some of its buildings still standing will be restored to house decentralized Collectivité services in the future. Most of the budget earmarked by the Collectivité for the repair of schools will be devoted to secondary schools; more than 3.6 million euros.
The school year was particularly difficult at Iles du Nord vocational school in Concordia. The school was strongly impacted by the hurricane: classrooms remained inaccessible throughout the school year, as were the premises housing the professional workshops.
High school students had little school time dedicated to the practical part of their subjects, workshops being practically unusable. It was the same story for the catering, hotel and restaurant sector where theoretical courses replaced practical courses, for a large part of the school year.
Emergency work and protective measures were carried out in the last quarter of 2017. The closing work started in March and was completed in May. Major work on the ceilings and partitions began in early July and work is scheduled for the last week of August.
Door and window repairs will be completed in July. Major repairs to the Centre Documentation et d’ Information (CDI) and the multipurpose hall will be carried out in September.
For the renovation of this school establishment, which includes 87 classrooms and premises for the various workshops (mechanics, carpentry and joinery, electricity, kitchen and catering), the Collectivité has committed the sum of 1.8 million euros. Of this amount, 1.5 million euros will be devoted to CDI and the multipurpose room. As a reminder, 9.5 million euros was committed for the repairs to all 18 schools.
Essential works include repairing the roof of the whole establishment, CDI and multipurpose room, perimeter fences, aluminium work, joinery, doors and windows, partitions and false ceilings.
