PHILIPSBURG–Members of Parliament (MPs) on Thursday unanimously approved a request to submit an urgent request to the Advisory Council for advice on two legal questions relating to Article 50, paragraphs 2 and 3 of the Constitution regarding suspended MP Claudius “Toontje” Buncamper.
Buncamper had sent a letter to Parliament in which he addressed the matter of his suspension based on the articles of the Constitution. On July 8, the Central Committee of Parliament proposed to the public meeting that Parliament should submit an urgent request to the Advisory Council for advice on two legal questions relating to the subject matter.
The questions are: How far does Article 50, paragraphs 2 and 3 of the Constitution infringe on international treaties? And what are the roles and rights of a deputy Member of Parliament and what does it mean to be deputising for a suspended Member of Parliament?
Eight of the 15 MPs were present at the urgent public meeting. They are United People’s (UP) party MPs Rolando Brison, Grisha Heyliger-Martin and Ludmila de Weever; independent MP Solange Duncan; Party for Progress (PFP) MPs Raeyhon Peterson and Melissa Gumbs; National Alliance (NA) MP Angelique Romou; and United Democrats (UD) MP Sarah Wescot-Williams.
