ST. EUSTATIUS–Some 100 passengers of MV Serenissima made a one-day stopover in St. Eustatius on Sunday morning. The cruise ship docked at Charles A. Woodley pier in Gallows Bay.
Many passengers went on a hike to The Quill National Park. They also visited the Miriam C. Schmidt Botanical Garden and viewed many of the island’s historical sites and landmarks as part of a walking tour. Some even had the chance to attend a church service at the denomination of their choice.
As it was the holiday season, the visitors had a chance to learn about events taking place during this time of year. There may not be snow in the Caribbean, but during the holidays the weather changes and dew may cover the ground and vegetation at nights.
String bands perform a song dedicated to this natural phenomenon which is titled “Arise and open the door.” This tune became a hit to a group of 17 passengers, who requested their tour guide to sing the song once again so they could have it recorded.
While the tour guide was singing the song, the group members sang and waltzed along when they stopped to visit the Simon Doncker Historical Museum.
The same song was also part of a concert that was presented to the visitors, who did not want to leave. The group was scheduled to return to the cruise ship around 7:30pm, but instead they returned around 9:00pm.
