PJIA completes phase 1 of terminal building roof repair | THE DAILY HERALD

AIRPORT–The Managing Board of the Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) announced on Thursday the completion of phase one of the roof repair project at its terminal building. The project began in March.

The completion of this phase is another step towards the reconstruction of the entire terminal building, the Managing Board said. According to the PJIA Projects, Planning and Systems (PPS) Department, the 250-metre-long roof, covering almost 16,000 square metres, was severely damaged by the September 2017 hurricanes.

Hurricane Irma ripped off 70 per cent of the building’s roof. Leakage became a grave concern, as it affected the airport’s internal operational infrastructure.
The Ballast Nedam company was contracted to reconstruct the roof in the first phase. Repairs included waterproofing, steel deck treatment and the installation of the flat metal sheets.

The Managing Board has confirmed that the roof repair plan will be carried out in three phases. Phase 2 of the project has already begun and includes the installation of the roof profiles and panels. Phase 3 will include the installation of the bullnoses and soffits that form the perimeter of the roof.

The newly completed roof works (Phase 1) will ensure that the terminal will be watertight. Only after the installation of the roof profiles, panels, bullnoses and soffits (phase 2 and 3 works) will the entire roof be able to sustain category 5 hurricane winds of 185 miles per hour. The overall project is set to be completed by November.
