POND ISLAND–The Council of Ministers will “allow room for the wheels of justice to turn” in the case that has landed government leader Member of Parliament Theo Heyliger in a cell in the Philipsburg Police Station on allegation of bribery, corruption and money-laundering.

Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin said on Wednesday morning that the Council of Ministers had “taken note” of the United Democrats party leader’s arrest on Tuesday morning in the codenamed “Larimar” investigation.

The prime minister said the Council looks forward to Heyliger having his day in court to defend himself against the charged leveled against him by the Prosecutor’s Office. His family was wished much strength in this tough time by Romeo-Marlin.

The Council of Ministers will “continue to work diligently” to manage the daily government affairs and in forging ahead with the rebuilding of the country after the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017.

The focus of the government is on one common goals of stability and progress for the country, the prime minister said. The ministers, therefore, “remain committed to the people of the country that we have the honour of serving.”

Coalition partner St. Maarten Christian Party leader Education and Culture Minister Wycliffe Smith in the Council of Ministers Press Briefing voiced his party’s and his continued commitment to the United Democrats/SMCP coalition. Smith said SMCP “reminds committed” to the governing accord and to giving the country “a stable government.”

Smith noted that it was “unfortunate” Heyliger is faced with “personal challenges” and that SMCP will allow time for the judicial process to take its course. The personal situation of one member “will not be allowed to hinder the great work that is ahead” of the government, he said.
