PHILIPSBURG–Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin said on Tuesday that Bureau Telecommunications and Post (BTP) St. Maarten “is not treating TelEm Group fairly.”
She was responding at the time to questions posed by Members of Parliament (MPs) during the continuation of a meeting of the Central Committee of Parliament on the sale of St. Maarten Cable TV to the telecoms provider.
According to Romeo-Marlin, BTP did not complete the request for renewal of TelEm’s fixed-line concession and Smitcoms’ concession for international services. “It seems that TelEm Group has to answer many questions from the BTP for any request it makes while other concession holders are not paying the BTP and do not fulfil the requirements as concession holder without their concession being revoked,” she told MPs.
“The BTP sends threatening and rude letters to TelEm whenever they feel TelEm is in violation. Additionally, the request for approval from Caribbean Teleview Services NV to transfer the licences for cable network and for television to TelEm is also pending.”
The question to which she had been responding at the time was whether it was true that BTP has pending concessions to be renewed without being handled. A related question was whether a St. Maarten Cable TV request for a transfer of concession had been without a reaction from BTP, to which the PM responded “Yes, BTP has not replied to the request.”
