PHILIPSBURG–The St. Maarten Police Force KPSM issued several safety tips on Monday as “part of the continuing efforts to provide a safe environment” for persons during the holiday season. This is part of its annual Holiday Task Force, said police.
Police advise the community to remember the three “A’s” of crime prevention. These are to be Aware of your surroundings at all times, be Alert to suspicious people and vehicles, and Avoid dangerous situations.
If persons are out for the evening, police advise that they be cautious about locking their windows and doors, even when only leaving the house for a short period of time. Persons should also place the lights, radio and television on timers so that one’s home appears occupied, and avoid displaying personal items of value where they can be seen from the outside.
If persons are leaving the island for the holidays, it is a good idea to have a neighbour or friend watch their home, said police.
Persons are advised to avoid carrying a large amount of cash on them, not to “flash cash around”, and to carry it in a safe place on one’s person. Wallets should be carried in the front pockets of clothing and purses should be carried close to one’s body. According to police, it is better to shop with another person instead of alone. “An extra pair of eyes helps,” said police.
If persons use an automated teller machine (ATM), police advise paying close attention to suspicious persons hanging around the machine. If there are suspicious persons around, it is better to pass up that machine and find another, said police.
“Keep your children close to you while attending any activities and don’t let them get separated from you. Pay attention to persons walking in front and behind you, especially in crowded places favourable for pickpockets,” said police.
Police advise persons returning to their vehicle or home to have keys “in your hands ready to open the door.” Before entering their vehicle, persons should also check the front and rear seats for anyone who may be hiding there. Persons should lock doors immediately after entering their vehicle, said police.
According to police, persons should not leave gifts or other valuables in plain sight in their vehicle. “It is an unnecessary temptation for thieves.”
Police request persons to ask their neighbours to keep a watchful eye on them.
“Drinking-and-driving is a danger to everyone. Remember that the risks of drinking-and-driving are not worth it. If you choose to drink, don’t drive. Make use of a designated driver or public transportation [such as – Ed.] taxi or bus,” said police.
Police advise persons to make sure that they know where their children are at all times and that they are safe.
“We wish the entire community of St. Maarten and its visitors a very safe and meaningful holiday season,” said police.
