Gracita Arrindell
PHILIPSBURG–People’s Progressive Alliance (PPA) leader Gracita Arrindell on Wednesday confirmed to The Daily Herald that the party will be contesting the January 9, 2020, snap parliamentary elections, but declined to give an insight into what the party slate will look like.
“We are very, very optimistic,” Arrindell said. “We are well on our way. We are very optimistic. I look forward to submitting the list next Thursday. I am very excited. We are very excited,” she said.
PPA received 280 votes during the 2018 snap parliamentary elections. This represented 2.07 per cent of the 13,953 persons who went to the polls in that election. At that time, Arrindell ran as the number one candidate on the party slate.
In a press release issued later in the day, Arrindell said the country is once again faced with the burden of going into snap elections called by the current political establishment, “who is the main source of St. Maarten’s constant political distractions from its focus on what really matters.
“The 2020 elections are not a popularity contest. Rather it is a job interview to elect the best people into office, who have your interest and that of the future of your children at heart, to work on your behalf. Do not sell your vote! It is against the law,” she said.
She listed some of the party’s “concrete actions” as being reducing the cost of living, creating new better-paying jobs, creating 21st century education that works for children, stimulating home ownership and introducing laws that hold officials accountable. The party did not specify how these goals would be met.
