PHILIPSBURG–The Philipsburg Promotional Board’s Christmas project to light up Philipsburg has been delayed a bit due to shipment issues with the majority of lights that had been ordered.

However, lights that were ordered for Cyrus Wathey Square have arrived and a light curtain was hung and lit on Saturday evening, brightening up the area for the holiday season. In addition to the light curtain, a number of Christmas trees and other holiday decorations were placed around the square to ring in the holiday season.

In explaining the snag with the project, PPB official Valentin Davis said due to the China/USA tariff war, PPB’s freight forwarder had diverted its shipment via Panama instead of the usual California/Miami route. This has resulted in the container being delayed by a week. The container will arrive only a few days before Christmas.

The lights are part of PPB’s NAf. 150,000 Christmas lighting project for Philipsburg. Last year’s event had to be cancelled because GEBE was busy reconnecting clients after the 2017 hurricanes and was unable to fully work with PPB for the project.

The Christmas lighting project is expected to include lighting up parts of Front Street, the area around the Courthouse, Cyrus Wathey Square and Boardwalk Boulevard. The project is themed “Christmas 2018 – Philipsburg Alive After Five.”

The board’s aim is to create an attraction that will motivate residents and tourists to frequent downtown Philipsburg, encourage afternoon shopping traffic in stores that will be open in the area, dine in the restaurants and bars, and gamble in the casinos, while enhancing the capital’s social environment. Once arrived and put up, the Christmas lights will remain up until the end of January, but the more generic decorative lights will remain installed for enhancement of the town centre and Boardwalk Boulevard.
