MARIGOT–The Préfecture has issued an advisory to motorists to take care on the roads ahead of the upcoming New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day holidays.
“Christmas and New Year holidays are an opportunity to get together with family and friends. Let’s not spoil them by careless driving and accidents,” it said in its release. “During this period, vigilance is more important than ever on our roads. Risky behaviour is too often the cause of serious accidents that have consequences not only for victims but entire families.
“The Préfecture and Gendarmerie remind everyone to be careful and avoid risky behaviour. Driving under the influence of alcohol or use of narcotics is strictly prohibited. On the road everyone is responsible for everyone else’s safety.
“Throughout the holiday season, police and Gendarmerie will be mobilised to remind people of the rules of good conduct through controls in St. Martin and St. Barths. Whether behind the wheel of a car, on two wheels, or on foot, everyone is concerned. We are all responsible, together, to make the roads safer.”
The following are tips for those going out to enjoy the festivities: if in a group select a designated driver who will not be drinking, make sure to fasten seatbelts and make sure passengers do the same, comply with speed limits and keep a safe distance from the car in front, do not use headphones or a mobile phone handset while driving, instead use the Bluetooth hands-free integrated system if fitted in the car, be courteous to other road-users who may be less experienced than you.
If driving a two-, three- or four-wheeled vehicle (quad) wearing a helmet is mandatory. It is advisable to wear protective clothing, high visibility jacket, long pants, closed shoes, and gloves to improve safety.
Pedestrians should always be vigilant and aware of what is going on around them. Wear a fluorescent vest with reflective strips if walking at night. Use a flashlight to be clearly visible to other road users.
