ANGUILLA–Anguilla has the highest number of students per population at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus, in the entire Eastern Caribbean. Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the UWI Open Campus, Luz Longsworth, who is currently visiting Anguilla, said, “By population, this means that Anguilla has the highest number of persons registered in UWI programmes in the Eastern Caribbean. This shows the island’s commitment to higher education from your government and from your people.”

Longsworth is taking part in activities recognising the 2018 graduates of the UWI Open Campus Anguilla, which began with presiding over the graduate recognition ceremony on Tuesday, November 27. She said, “I am enjoying my visit to Anguilla and interaction with the people of the island. We’ve had a long relationship with Anguilla; it is a member country, a contributing country to UWI.” She commended the Anguilla Open Campus for its galloping growth, noting that there are currently 211 students registered in the on-line programmes, as well as a mass of students enrolled in the face-to-face continuing education courses.

She gave a comprehensive overview of UWI’s current position as well as a detailed directional view of where and how it intends to expand its geographical boundaries and its curriculum. UWI is celebrating its 70th anniversary, evolving from its start in 1948 as a university college in Jamaica with 33 medical students to now being ranked the number one university in the entire Caribbean. Additionally it is ranked in the top three per cent of all universities in Latin America and the Caribbean, and in the top five per cent of all 28,000 universities globally. It is the largest provider of higher education in the Caribbean, with a student body of nearly 50,000 located on campuses in Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and an open campus that has graduated 200,000 students to date. She said, “The founders of UWI were very clear that UWI was set up to build an educated group of Caribbean students. The vision was always that UWI was to move to the people by starting its outreach to communities that did not have a campus.”

Longsworth discussed UWI’s Triple A vision which is the foundation of its 2017-2022 strategic plan. “The theme for the Triple A strategy is revitalising Caribbean development, because as a region we have been the slowest to recover from the 2008 financial meltdown and we seem to be moving from shock to shock.” She ended her presentation by saying, “There is no reason to think that because a country is small it can’t do big things. UWI will continue to work with Anguilla’s government and students in order to continue to do big things on the island.”
