Works are underway.

KRALENDIJK--Reconstruction work on Phase 3 of Kaya Grandi in the centre of Kralendijk is in full swing. Through this project, Bonaire aims to improve the city centre’s infrastructure, with a particular focus on better drainage, enhanced accessibility for pedestrians and motorists, and a more modern appearance for the public space.

This phase of the project covers the section of Kaya Grandi between the start of Kaya Isla Ariba and the intersection with Kaya L.D. Gerharts. A key component of the reconstruction is the renewal and expansion of the existing drainage system.

The main rainwater conduit, for instance, has been enlarged to a diameter of 60 centimetres, allowing the system to handle greater volumes of rainwater. Additionally, new street gullies have been installed and connected to the central drainage line; at least 10 such gullies have been added along the entire stretch to capture and drain rainwater more efficiently.

Furthermore, the street now has a “crowned” profile – meaning the centre of the roadway is higher than the sides, which causes rainwater to flow towards the edges. From there, it is collected by the street gullies and channelled into the upgraded drainage system.

This combination of a larger drainage conduit, new street gullies and an adjusted road profile is intended to help reduce flooding on the road, thereby improving both drainage and the overall functionality of the infrastructure during and after rain showers.

Completion is targeted for the end of 2026. Once finished, the section in question will become accessible to pedestrians.

The reconstruction of Kaya Kòrsou is scheduled for January 2027, at which time the final phase of work on Kaya Grandi will also be undertaken, specifically the stretch from the intersection with Kaya L.D. Gerharts to Kaya Boneiru. Once all work is finished and traffic safety conditions allow, Kaya Grandi will be reopened to vehicular traffic.

According to government, these various projects represent a significant step towards

the continued improvement of downtown Kralendijk. Ultimately, the initiative aims to deliver a more functional infrastructure, a more attractive public space and a city centre that is more accessible to both the residents and the visitors of Bonaire.
