PSVE teachers will continue to monitor situation at school | THE DAILY HERALD

PHILIPSBURG–Teachers of the Preparatory Secondary Vocational Education (PSVE) section of St. Maarten Academy will continue to monitor the situation at their school as it relates to the way they are treated by principal Lavern Nelson.

It was decided during a meeting with their union on Sunday that teachers will monitor the situation and report any concerns to their union and to the Foundation for Academic and Vocational Education (FAVE) board.

Asked whether industrial action is off the table, Windward Islands Teachers Union (WITU) President Claire Elshot said the union never publicly indicates ahead of time whether it will take such actions.

She said last night that during Sunday’s three-hour-long gathering the union communicated to teachers the information FAVE Chairman Roland Duncan provided to the union during a meeting last week. The minutes of the meeting with Duncan were also circulated amongst teachers ahead of Sunday’s meeting.

Elshot said that while her members still believe Nelson can be reassigned, as has been the case at some other schools and even at the lower levels at PSVE, they will monitor the situation for now.

“As a union, we communicated to them what was told to us. We will continue to monitor the situation,” Elshot said, adding that her members are still not happy. “We would see how best they would cope with it.”

Teachers have registered a number of complaints about Nelson and have called for her to be removed or reassigned from her position. The teachers had indicated in an earlier meeting with their union that they were willing to take industrial action if their concerns were not resolved.

Duncan has maintained that Nelson will not be removed from her position and he considers the teacher’s complaints frivolous. He reiterated his position that Nelson will not be removed during a meeting with the WITU board on Thursday last week.
