PHILIPSBURG–The talented pupils of public schools serenaded all public schools and some of the businesses in Philipsburg from Monday, December 3, to Friday, December 7.
This was coordinated by head of the Public Education Department and head of the Music Enhance Committee (MEC) Glenderlin Davis-Holiday. This committee compromises music teachers Rosemary Marsham Hodge, Everard Blackman, Omar Hunter, Edsel Eusebius, Fleur Kong Yong Fook-Rosenblad and Donnavan Lynch.
Along with the pupils, the team presented two shows per day at the public schools. Children performed solos, duets, choir performances, steel drums, string band, xylophones, recorders, poetry, and many more cultural performances, including the ponum dance, were showcased.
The performances were enjoyed by the TelEm Group, Windward Islands Bank, Royal Bank of Trinidad, the Government Building and the cruise ship complex. The Government Building was a high point, as the MEC felt it necessary to give back and share the spirit of the season as the nation is still in the rebuilding phase. The workers enjoyed the group’s rendition of “St. Maarten Love” and other melodies.
The MEC normally has one big Christmas event under the tents of Princess Port De Plaisance Resort, but due to financial constraints it was decided to go from school to school to cut cost. The group also visited the senior citizens home and clients showed their appreciation immensely by dancing and clapping along with performances.
The MEC thanked all contributors who assisted in making the event a success, as well as benefactors who often contribute to this cause. Any funds raised during the event go back to further develop the music programme among public schools.
