WEATHER:  

This afternoon through Monday midday: Partly cloudy and hazy with isolated showers possible.

SURFACE WINDS: 
This afternoon through Monday midday: East southeasterly with a gentle to moderate breeze of 08 to 18 mph.

 

SYNOPSIS:  

Weak unstable conditions may cause isolated showers across the local area.

A small craft advisory is in effect for St. Maarten as above normal seas will remain across the region. Small craft operators and sea bathers should exercise extreme caution.

 

STATE OF THE SEA:  Moderate to rough         WAVES/SWELLS: 6 to 9 feet

 

SPECIAL FEATURES: 

At 11:00 am, the center of Tropical Storm Karen was located near latitude 12.5 north, longitude 61.7 west or about 390 miles south southeast of St. Maarten. Karen is moving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph (20 km/h) and this general motion is expected to continue today. A turn toward the northwest is forecast to occur on Monday, followed by a turn toward the north on Tuesday. On the forecast track, the center of Karen will move away from the Windward Islands today, and then across the eastern Caribbean Sea tonight and Monday. The center of Karen is forecast to pass about 160 miles west of St. Maarten on Tuesday evening.

 

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours.

 

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km) from the center.

 

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1006 mb (29.71 inches).

 

  1. The thunderstorm activity associated with a strong tropical wave that has moved off the west coast of Africa this morning is quickly becoming better organized. Environmental conditions are conducive for further development, and

a tropical depression or tropical storm is expected to form later today or tonight while the system moves generally westward over the eastern tropical Atlantic at 15 to 20 mph.

The Meteorological Department of St. Maarten will continue to monitor the progress of these systems and update the public accordingly.
