PHILIPSBURG–Minister of Justice Raphael Boasman announced on Wednesday that the Police Force of St. Maarten will soon see twenty officers added to its overall staff. The plan was initially proposed by the police management team to combat the extra-violent robberies occurring in St. Maarten.
Boasman presented the plan to the Council of Ministers last week and received approval to add more officers to the Justice Ministry’s already-depleted payroll.
“Ten will be experienced officers recruited abroad and the other 10 will be open for those citizens who are interested in joining law enforcement. Police have assured me that those coming from abroad will not hamper the promotion of any police officer waiting to climb the career ladder,” stated Boasman during the weekly Council of Ministers press briefing on Wednesday.
He did not give a timeline, but stated that the green light had been given to the Police Force, which will now initiate the recruitment process. Boasman hopes that the increase of men and women in blue on the street can help curb crime on the island.
