SIMPSON BAY–In collaboration with community councils, the Netherlands Red Cross, through its St. Maarten branch is organising information sessions about its current recovery programmes in nine neighbourhoods on which the Red Cross has focused since the onset of the response to Hurricane Irma.
The districts are Cay Bay, Cay Hill, Cole Bay, Dutch Quarter, Fort Willem, Middle Region, Over the Bank, St. Peters, and Sucker Garden. Currently, the Red Cross has three programmes aimed at helping families who were impacted by Hurricane Irma.
The Red Cross launched the second phase of the Supermarket Voucher programme through which families in need receive Red Cross food vouchers allowing them to purchase groceries in participating supermarkets.
In addition, the Home Repair programme has completed its first assessments, with technical officers providing expertise and the Red Cross providing materials to support families in the repair of their homes.
Finally, the School Meal programme, which provides breakfasts and hot lunches to thousands of students each day, has been extended until the end of the school year.
“Our programmes are aimed at meeting the evolving needs of the population, from early and intermediate relief like school meals and supermarket vouchers, to helping people with the materials and expertise needed to repair their homes. These meetings are a way for us to update our beneficiaries on our activities and give them a glimpse at upcoming programmes,” said Netherlands Red Cross head of mission Michele Sanchez.
The first information sessions will take place in Cay Bay on Thursday, April 5; in Middle Region on Monday, April 9; and in Sucker Garden on Wednesday, April 11.
The Red Cross, in collaboration with the Cay Bay Community Council, invites all residents of Cay Bay to Alex’s Yard at 7:00pm April 5.
Details about and invitations for additional meetings in other neighbourhoods will be communicated on social media and via radio in the following weeks. More information can be obtained by calling the St. Maarten Red Cross at 545-2333/2304.
