ST. EUSTATIUS–Statians are good at putting on a show and this Monday’s Red and White Parade was no exception. Starting at Buzzy Bees day-care centre, the approximately 200 brightly-coloured cheerleaders, dancers, seniors and supporters soon set the island buzzing.

It was the 12th annual Christmas parade organised by “Lady of Culture” Marcella Gibbs-Marsdin. Christmas melodies mixed with carnival beats quickly echoed throughout St. Eustatius. Led by the fearless toddlers of Caribbean Tribe, the procession slowly made its musical way to the Lion’s Den.

Smartphones flashed along the entire route and the dancers from Pearl dancing school showed everybody what their twinkling toes and neat choreography were all about: seasonal joy and lots of fun.

The Chinese community on the island was well represented by the Yummy Tummy girls, or “JIM” as the dancing delegation from South China would like to be known. JIM stands for Jenny, Iris and Min and these exotic Asian “birds of paradise” were enthusiastically welcomed.

The float with seniors from Chapel Piece health and recreational centre was a waving mass of Christmas tinsel and effortless energy at times. The eldest senior citizen on the float was 99-year-old Sophia Busby. “It is Christmas, and even though I shall behave myself, I am going to enjoy this party,” she said.

Celebrations continued at the Lion’s Den with stage entertainment provided by “Line Dancing” while Caribbean food and refreshments were offered at various booths.
