SABA–The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (I&W) and Rijkswaterstaat (RWS), together with the Public Entity Saba, are developing plans for the much-needed renovation of the runway of Saba’s Juancho Yrausquin Airport.
The tarmac has passed its lifespan, showing clear signs of deterioration and needs to be repaved to make sure the Airport can remain operational, meeting international requirements for flight safety.
Currently, I&W and RWS are starting up the tender process for the renovation works. The project is planned to take four weeks, and is scheduled to take place during the low tourism season, from September 10 until October 9, 2018.
As RWS announced earlier that the Airport will be temporarily closed during the renovation works, the Public Entity is currently making plans with relevant stakeholders to ensure accessibility to and from the island during that period, presumably by ferry.
A town hall meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 18, during which teams from I&W and RWS will present the project to the public. They will also answer questions.
