Request to free Corallo rejected

PHILIPSBURG–The request by Francesco Corallo’s awyers to suspend his detention was rejected by the Joint Court of Justice.

The decision implies that the casino boss will remain in detention pending the hearing of a request for his extradition submitted by the Italian authorities. A date for the hearing has not been set as yet. Corallo was arrested and detained at the request of the Italian authorities on December 13, 2016 in St. Maarten. He is suspected of tax evasion and money laundering. Since then, he has been in detention pending his extradition.

His arrest was the result of an international collaboration between Italy, St. Maarten, French St. Martin and the Netherlands. This fits into the joint, intensive approach to combat cross-border corruption and fraud. In the investigation, among other things bank accounts and a large number of goods were seized.
