SABA–Rights of the Child Week at Sacred Heart School (SHS) in Saba commenced with a celebration on Tuesday, November 20, and continued on Friday, November 23, with “Wacky Friday” and pupils versus teachers in a Games Challenge.
On Tuesday all pupils were served breakfast with a variety of different meals from which to choose. Soon after, there was the School’s Assembly, which was led by the Grade Two pupils who performed Un Poco Loco – Just Dance 2019 version and sang “Child of the Universe” with the assistance of the Grade Two teacher Orlando McPherson and Assistant Teacher Camille Johnson.
Kindergarten Two with teacher Elca Charles Simmons created a song titled “We are the Children of K2 and We Know Our Rights,” which was symbolic of the essence of Children’s Rights universally.
Teachers Miranda Olga Simmons, Adam Burwell, Tevonille Dunchie, Bianca and Camille Johnson and Camille Fahey Blackman dramatized a short skit for pupils and parents pertaining to Article 8 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in which it is stated that governments must respect every child’s right to a name, nationality and family ties.
Article 13 on freedom of expression was also highlighted, as children have the right to find out things and share what they think with others, by talking, drawing, writing, or in any other way, unless it harms other people. It was also underlined that Article 16 of the Convention highlights the right of children to privacy.
Throughout the week SHS teachers continued to teach the Rights of a Child and show pupils that they do have rights but need to become aware of consequences which go along with the rights and to respect them appropriately.
On Friday, the school had a Fun Day for pupils, custodians, teachers and principal led by its Sports Team consisting of guidance counsellor Jarmila Wilson Berkel and teachers Dunchie and McPherson.
The honours of the Wackiest Students/People’s Choice went to grade-five-winner Isaiah Hassell and Jose Rodriguez of grade four.
Everyone, including teachers, was decked in his or her wacky outfit and had to compete against pupils from K1 to grade six.
