“Star of Statia” Teresita van Putten’s house decorated for the Christmas season. She has been carrying on this tradition for more than a decade.

ST. EUSTATIUS–Several roads in St. Eustatius will be temporarily closed today, Thursday, December 31, in connection with a fireworks display hosted by the public entity St. Eustatius and Kimuchie Fireworks at the cemetery of the Roman Catholic Church at midnight on New Year’s Eve. The public is invited to come out and ring in the New Year.

To ensure public safety, a few measures were put in place. Temporary road closures will go into effect starting at 10:00pm today. Ruby Hassellweg, Van Tonningenweg and a minor section of the Sandy Road at the back of Gwendoline Van Putten School will be closed due to their close proximity to the fireworks display. These roads will be reopened for motor vehicles and pedestrians on conclusion of the display.

The community is encouraged to make their travel arrangements to Lower Town prior to the 10:00pm road closure. The Farm will be utilised for emergency response only. Sonny Cranston Ballpark is designated for parking.

Many churches will hold Old Year services prior to the fireworks display. The Seventh-Day Adventist Church will hold its service at sundown, Bethel Methodist Church will start its service at 10:00pm, the Roman Catholic Church will hold its service at 11:00pm, and other churches will be open for services leading up to the New Year as well.

There will be no New Year’s Day Mass at the Roman Catholic Church, Ricardo Fortin Sr. said.

Other than attending church services, many people will be enjoying the nightlife or going to private parties on the last day of 2020.
