SUCKER GARDEN--Friends and loved ones gathered Friday afternoon at Royal Funeral Home in Sucker Garden to say their final goodbye to longtime journalist Robert Luckock, who passed away at the age of 74 following a brief illness.
The intimate farewell was attended by a small gathering of people and provided a private setting to mark his passing. Those who knew Luckock remembered him as a kind and gentle soul with a loving and helpful heart, qualities that made him a valued friend, colleague and member of the community.
A celebration of life will be held for Luckock on Sunday, August 30, at the St. Maarten Yacht Club (SMYC) Restaurant in Simpson Bay, at 4:00pm. Cyclists and runners will carry Robert’s ashes for a sort ride and at 5:00pm a gathering will be held at the Yacht Club for fond memories of Luckock descrbed as “our special friend.”
Luckock fell ill on Saturday, August 1, and was rushed to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC), where he was admitted. He later passed away.
Luckock was a veteran journalist who worked at The Daily Herald for about three decades as the newspaper's French St. Martin correspondent. During his career, he also covered the hospitality industry, the marine sector, local sports and a wide range of other news.
Known for his professionalism and quiet nature, Luckock was always willing to assist colleaues and remained deeply committed to his work.
Born in England, Luckock spent much of his life in St. Maarten, where he embraced island life while building a long and respected career in journalism. His contributions to The Daily Herald and to news coverage on both sides of the island spanned more than three decades, earning him the respect of colleagues and the wider community.
