POND ISLAND –The National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) is “now fully ready” and will “likely be discussed in Parliament later this month,” according to Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin, who is just back from the first meeting of the Steering Committee attached to the World Bank-administered Dutch Recovery Trust Fund held in Washington D.C.
The completion comes “after months of intensive preparations” with the World Bank and stakeholders.
“The NRRP will be our roadmap toward building St. Maarten back better. It offers a comprehensive strategy to guide our country to a more resilient and sustainable future,” Romeo-Marlin said in a press statement on Thursday.
St. Maarten’s member on the Steering Committee former prime minister Marcel Gumbs and the Netherlands’ member Frans Weekers were also at the meeting in Washington D.C. where, in addition to the NRRP, the final preparation of the first projects to be financed by the Trust Fund were discussed. These projects will help to address some of St. Maarten’s most urgent needs – repair of homes and critical public buildings, removal of debris and training programmes.
Weekers said the NRRP “forms a solid basis to make choices for the recovery process and to invest together in the future of the island.”
Speaking of cooperation, Gumbs said: “I’m extremely pleased with the cooperation with the Netherlands and the World Bank in the Steering Committee so far. We fully agree on the urgent need to help the people of St. Maarten in an accountable and effective manner.”
The next meeting of the Steering Committee will be in St. Maarten in the second week of July.
More information on the NRRP can be found on the government’s website and at Facebook.com/National Recovery Program Bureau.
