Angelique Romou
PHILIPSBURG–Social and youth activist Angelique Romou has left the United Democrats (UD) and United People’s (UP) party and will be contesting the 2020 snap parliamentary elections as the number ten candidate on the National Alliance (NA) list.
Romou said she decided to leave her former party because the passion which she has for the social development of St. Maarten, particularly education and the progression of youth, were not dealt with in the manner she envisioned. She said the core of every society is education. “Moving forward, we can only empower our people through education which will in turn provide professionals who will work towards and for the improvement of their country.”
She is “confident that she can reverse the trends of many ills that plague our society as a member of the National Alliance, because they are proving to be the party of stability, progression and inclusion.”
Romou obtained 94 votes when she contested the 2018 elections on the UD slate and 104 votes when she contested in 2014 with the UP.
She said having worked in the field of education as an educator, executing youth programmes in the cabinet of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunications, and currently working as a Project Manager in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport – Division of Educational Innovations, gave her insight and knowledge into government’s working apparatus. It helped her to “have insight and [obtain – Ed.] a hands-on approach to working on projects for the improvement of our country, moreover working on the streets and in the various districts of St. Maarten gave her the feel and know-how as to what to champion in Parliament to reverse the negative trends prevalent on the island,” she said in a press release.
Her vision for a future St. Maarten is to see “our social fabric restored; our youth excel and succeed in our country St. Maarten; to see equal employment opportunities for all, to see proper health care services and to see our dearly beloved seniors age gracefully.” She said these reasons prompted her to contest the 2020 snap elections as the #10 candidate on the NA slate. Romou said she is “ready now more than ever, to work for the people of St. Maarten.”
The mother of two said she has always been involved in community-building activities before going abroad to study in 1993 and continued to do so upon her return to the island in 1999. She engrossed herself in charitable work in areas that are dear to her, such as youth affairs, education, combating domestic violence; and issues related to family life and social outreach programmes, including serving the elderly.
Romou said she has “a proven track record of showing commitment to youth, family and community development overall,” adding that she is “dedicated to country above self, exemplifies sincerity and leads by example.”
