PHILIPSBURG–Rotary Club of St. Maarten held two of its Christmas activities last week, helping to spread Christmas cheer to those in need.

The club began its annual food hamper distribution on Wednesday, December 11. In total, 150 food hampers were taken to homes of persons in the community. “The food hampers were packed full of items needed for a complete holiday feast,” said the club in a press release on Monday.

“It is with extra warmth in our hearts, not only during the holiday season, but the entire year, that Rotarians dedicate so much time and attention to those within our community that need our assistance. By putting service to others above self, Rotarians worldwide help make the communities we live in better for all.

“Seeing the smiles on all the children’s faces when presented a toy and food, and when handing over a food hamper to a deserving recipient, really gets you into the Christmas spirit and is what makes all our hard work worth it,” said Rotary Club of St. Maarten President Sherrylle Horsford.

The club, in partnership with Domino’s Pizza and Divico Distributors, hosted its annual Christmas party at the Dutch Quarter Community Centre on Saturday, December 14. Approximately 125 children attended the party.

Funtopia did face painting and had other activities to engage the attending children while they awaited Santa Claus’ arrival. Musician and owner of The Hole in the Wall bar Bob Baron led the children in Christmas carols while they cheered and called for Santa to come.

The children were served food and drinks courtesy of Domino’s Pizza and Divico Distributors, by Rotarians acting as Santa’s helpers.

“This party is very special to me, as this is what Christmas is all about: showing our thanks and giving back to the community. Seeing the smiles on all the children’s faces as they receive their toys and goodies is priceless. It really sets the tone for the Christmas spirit,” said Rotarian John Caputo, who is also a Domino’s Pizza franchisee.

The toys distributed to children in these activities – mainly balls, dolls and board games – were donated by Rotarians, the island’s Interact clubs, Learning Unlimited (LU) Preparatory School students, and persons who dropped them off at Domino’s Pizza.

“A special ‘Thanks’ goes out to Cost U Less, Super Plaza and Jade Dollar Store for donating many toys and proving good prices on others,” said the club.
