PHILIPSBURG–The eighth annual Rotary/Rotaract Spelling Bee will kick-off at Belair Community Centre this Sunday, October 20, at 1:00pm. The spelling bee is organised and hosted by the Rotary Club of St. Maarten-Mid Isle and the Rotaract Club of St. Maarten Sunrise.
Registered to participate in the Spelling Bee are 35 pupils from 13 schools – nine from St. Maarten and four from Anguilla. The organisers remind participants to be at Belair Community Center by 12:30pm Sunday.
The participating St. Maarten schools are Asha Stevens Hillside Christian School, Leonald Conner Primary School, Oranje Primary School, Marie Genevieve de Weever School, St. Dominic Primary School, St. Joseph Primary School, Methodist Agogic Centre (MAC) John A. Gumbs Campus, MAC Browlia F. Maillard Campus, and Seventh Day Adventist School.
The four participating Anguilla schools are Alwyn Allison Richardson Primary School, Valley Primary School, Morrison Vanterpool Primary School and Vivian Vanterpool Primary School.
The spelling bee will be held over three consecutive weeks. The preliminary round will be held on Sunday. The preliminary round’s 10 highest scorers will advance to the semi-final round, which will be held on Sunday, October 27. The five highest scorers from the semi-final round will advance to the final round, which is scheduled for Sunday, November 3.
Two three-hour tutorial sessions were held at the University of St. Martin (USM) in September and October to prepare participants for the Spelling Bee.
The Rotary Club of St. Maarten-Mid Isle and the Rotaract Club of St. Maarten Sunrise said they encourage and welcome persons to come out and support the participants of the 8th annual Rotary/Rotaract Spelling Bee on all three Sundays. They also said the school with the best supporting team will win a prize.
