Empty coolers at one of the supermarket on the island.
ST. EUSTATIUS–The rough seas which have been affecting the region recently forced a cargo vessel that would normally deliver goods to St. Eustatius to make a detour, resulting in stores not receiving their weekly shipment of food and household items.
This has caused partially empty shelves and coolers at many of the supermarkets on the island as basic foods such as milk, bread, vegetables and fruits etc. have run out. The largest supermarket on Statia – Duggins – also experienced supply shortages.
One bakery on the island had to close its doors after running out of flour. Many shop owners said that they expected to receive goods on Wednesday evening, as a barge was due to arrive on the island at that time.
