THE HAGUE–St. Maarten Minister Plenipotentiary in The Hague Jorien Wuite presented the artwork “185-Mile Winds” by artist Ruby Bute to Council of State Vice-President Thom de Graaf on Monday afternoon.

Bute painted the artwork one year after Hurricane Irma devastated St. Maarten in September 2017. The painting is currently making a tour of a number of government entities in The Hague. It previously was on display with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defence, and will also be shown in the First and Second Chambers of the Dutch Parliament.

“185-Mile Winds” will be on display to Council of State visitors up to and including Friday, February 15.

De Graaf said residents of the Kingdom had sprung into action after the hurricane struck St. Maarten. “With a large national collection on September 15, 2017, the Netherlands Red Cross managed to collect almost 20 million euros, which was more than they had hoped for. Suddenly, the entire Netherlands realised that somewhere far away other Dutch people were in distress. The undivided Dutch nationality suddenly was more than a constitutional phenomenon, it was real,” De Graaf said.
