Sammy gets new pet parents and sibling | THE DAILY HERALD

A smiling Sammy was quickly at home with new pet mom Asha Yee Fong (right) and was eager to say goodbye to Sade Swanston and the team at St. Maarten Veterinary Clinic.

CAY HILL–Sammy, the three-legged shih tzu, has a new home and a sibling who is also her age and breed.

Sammy’s story of abandonment and homelessness touched the heart of banker Gary Yee Fong. He shared her tale with his wife Asha. After that, it took a short period of contemplation before they made the decision to adopt Sammy and give their 12-year-old shih tzu Maya a sibling.

They both went to visit Sammy at St. Maarten Veterinary Clinic before heading to work on Tuesday morning. It was pure love and an instant emotional connection between the trio. The couple was hooked and so was Sammy.

Asha collected Sammy from the clinic after work and headed home to introduce her to Maya.

The journey to Sammy’s new home was not just based on a quick look. Dekha Swanston of St. Maarten Veterinary Clinic said the Yee Fongs satisfied the criteria to be Sammy’s adoptive parents. The clinic was not willing to let Sammy go to just anyone and risk her being abandoned again.

The Yee Fongs’ road to adoption came from a place of deep empathy. They contemplated what if it had been their dog that was left alone and the level of sadness that would follow, especially if she kept looking for her owners and wondering what was happening.

Sammy’s leg had to be amputated after a massive infection that resulted from an injury. Despite efforts by veterinarian Gary Swanston, the leg could not be saved. She ended up losing more than her leg – she also lost her home because her previous owner did not want to deal with the perceived trials of a differently-abled dog.

There are many other dogs and cats like Sammy, with or without injuries, waiting at veterinary clinics across the island for their day to go to permanent homes.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a forever pet parent and has the capacity to do so should contact St. Maarten Veterinary Clinic at tel. +1-721-542-0111, or any other veterinary clinic.
