PHILIPSBURG–Chairperson of Parliament/Member of Parliament (MP) Sarah Wescot-Williams has requested an update on issues surrounding the dump from Minister of Public Housing, Environment, Spatial Development and Infrastructure VROMI Miklos Giterson.
In a letter to Giterson dated August 14, Wescot-Williams said Parliament continues to receive offers and requests by persons and companies that want to make presentations on solutions for the dump.
“Understandably, these requests are made on the premise that the respective companies and individuals have the best solution for our problem. From media reports and presentations to parliament, there seem to be many actions by different actors where St. Maarten’s waste problems and current dump are concerned,” she said in the letter.
To place the requests in perspective, Wescot-Williams asked Giterson to provide an update on the status of the study commissioned by the World Bank to build a waste disposal facility in St. Maarten and remediate the current dumpsite.
She also asked what government is doing with respect to the court verdict regarding suppressing landfill fires. Other questions were what is the status of the intention expressed by the Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the landfill/dump, and what extra cost is being incurred that would further enlighten her on the topic of garbage and landfill and waste disposal?
The letter was copied to Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin.
