Wescot-Williams’ resignation letter.
PHILIPSBURG–United Democrats (UD) Member of Parliament (MP) Sarah Wescot-Williams has tendered her resignation as Chairperson of Parliament on Sunday.
Wescot-Williams said in a letter to Parliament last night that “having learnt of the latest political developments, I hereby tender my resignation as Chairperson of Parliament, thanking the Members of Parliament for their cooperation during my tenure.”
Wescot-Williams’ resignation comes as the United Democrats/St. Maarten Christian Party (UD/SMCP) government lost the support from two additional MPs in Dr. Luc Mercelina and Chanel Brownbill, who left to form a new coalition government with the opposition parties.
UD MP Franklin Meyers, who recently declared himself independent, is understood not to be part of the talks to form a new coalition. Widespread reports that the Council of Ministers will move to dissolve Parliament given the political developments could not be confirmed.
UD MP Sarah Wescot-Williams confirmed to The Daily Herald that a new coalition is being formed. This newspaper understands that the new coalition is with the National Alliance (NA) and United St. Maarten Party (US Party).
